X⁵ Case Study

When SC Data, Inc. won a government contract, they had a problem. “We were thrilled to get the contract, of course, but we realized that we had no where to go with that much additional business.” said Diane Merritt, owner. “Our own warehouse was already at 90% capacity. We needed a solution fast and we thought we’d have to break down and rent additional space.” After searching for local facilities and gathering quotes for as much as $12 per square foot for rent, Ms. Merritt was watching her profits get eaten up by additional costs. That’s when she found out about X⁵ – a new space-saving steel storage system that increases the available storage space by eliminating unnecessary aisles.

In Ms. Merritt’s record storage warehouse, shelving was used the traditional way with 36” aisles between each rack for access. By installing X⁵ heavy duty wire shelving on tracks, SC Data was able to recover over 40% of their floor space. They added more shelving units in the same amount of space and were able to handle all of the new business and still have room to grow. “We were able to keep all of our business under one roof. I like that, and I like what it did for our bottom line. X⁵ has paid for itself many times over.”

SC Data used several of the available shelf sizes to handle the variety of loads they receive, and being able to adjust the placement of the shelves at 1" intervals allowed them to customize each rack to the product being stored. “We store a lot of different things for our customers, and the flexibility of the X⁵ system was terrific. We could add extra shelves when we needed very high-density units, and we could mix both 18” and 24” units on the same set of tracks for the most efficient use of our space.” “One thing I really liked was that we didn’t have to bolt the tracks down. I know that we can reposition or add onto our current system with very little effort. And the easy assembly meant we were able to get started fast.”

X⁵ can also be used without the track assembly. Individual units come with adjustable glides for stationary use. “We use X⁵ throughout our office, too. We use several units for our office supplies like paper and envelopes.” Accessories like 4" casters can also make the units mobile. “We created several mobile carts using the 48" high posts, shelves, and 4" casters” said Merritt. “We use those every day to load and unload the racks.”
